World's Fastest Internet Speed Record Now 1.84 petabit/s – Faster Than All Global Internet Traffic

The world data transfer speed record was broken again this week after researchers from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Chalmers University of Technology managed to transmit data at a rate of 1.84 petabit/s (Pbps). This is much faster than global internet traffic which is currently 0.997 Pbps (997 Tbps). It is also almost twice as fast as the previous record of 1 Pbps recorded by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) last June.

Data is transmitted through 223 wave channels from a single light source through a 37-core fiber optic cable 7.9 kilometers long. On other systems over 1000 light sources are needed to transmit data at the same speed. It also uses only one chip to function. Because according to researchers the same system has the potential to transfer data up to 100 Pbps by adding light sources, chips and optical fibers in the future.
