A Rice Breed That Is Planted Once But Can Be Harvested Eight Times Was Successfully Produced

In Kedah, efforts have been started to carry out a rice planting program five times in a period of two years. The frequency of harvesting will increase as well as increasing the supply of rice needed by the country. But the process of growing rice is tiring and time-consuming.

Therefore, scientists in China, the United States, and Australia have been trying to develop rice breeds that only need to be planted once but can be harvested several times since 1999. Because of their efforts, rice breeds that can be harvested eight times with one planting have been successfully produced. Pada is a breed of Asian rice Oryza sativa and African rice Oryza longistaminata.

More interesting is that the rice production output of this breed is comparable to that of the once-a-year rice crop in the first four years. So to maintain a high harvest, this rice only needs to be replanted every four years.

It will not reduce the cost of fertilizers, seeds and farmers' labor but will reduce the emission of carbon dioxide gas used during the rice replanting process. Farmers' profits are expected to increase up to 161% depending on the land area.
