Apple Spends RM2 Billion For Function To Send Emergency SOS Signals Via Satellite

With the launch of the iPhone 14 device series, Apple also introduced a new function that has not been seen on any smart device before, which is Emergency SOS via Satellite.

Apple has recently confirmed that they have spent $450 million (~RM2 billion) to develop the infrastructure for this feature. Apple has also worked with satellite provider Globalstar to ensure this feature works as well as possible.

Apple's spending on Globalstar is not only limited to satellite infrastructure and ground stations, including the company's employees. According to Apple, a total of 300 employees will be responsible for ensuring that Apple device users who use the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature have an individual to answer any of their questions.

Globalstar has 24 satellites orbiting the earth and all of them are used to receive messages from iPhone 14 device users who need help, and these messages are sent to the earth at stations where Globalstar will send the signal to the emergency department where they will interact with the user to help those who may be lost in the forest or need physical assistance.

Although these satellites and stations orbit and are present all over the world, the Emergency SOS via Satellite function is only available for the United States and Canadian markets this month.
