Elon Musk buys Twitter, Mastodon harvests new users

The drama on Twitter after it was acquired by Elon Musk made many users turn to other applications. In recent days, alternative social media and microblogging platforms have seen a surge of new users.

Call it Mastodon, a decentralized social media application that is the main destination for migrating Twitter users. Mastodon founder and CEO Eugen Rochko said his platform currently has 1 million monthly active users after more than 500,000 new users joined since the Twitter acquisition completed on Oct. 27.

According to data firm Sensor Tower, Mastodon received 320,000 new downloads from app stores in the United States in the period October 27 - November 7. Globally, Mastodon grew 657% to 1 million downloads in the same period, up from 15,000 in the previous 12 days.

But Mastodon isn't the only alternative app former Twitter users have turned to. Tumblr also grew 77% from 170,000 installs to 301,000 installs in the same period globally.

Alternative social media application CounterSocial has also grown 3,200% globally, with downloads reaching 33,000, as quoted by TechCrunch, Saturday (12/11/2022).

But Twitter doesn't just get bad news. Apparently, there are also many new users who have installed Twitter since it was acquired by Elon Musk. According to Sensor Tower data, the number of Twitter downloads rose 21% in the 12 days after being taken over by Musk.

Sensor Tower reported that Twitter recorded 7.6 million downloads globally and earned USD 502,000 from its users. An increase from 6.3 million downloads and revenue of USD 303,000 from the period before Musk bought.

But these income figures may not be completely accurate. The reason is, Twitter Blue, which is Twitter's main selling product for its users, is currently being suspended just a few days after its launch.
