The Artemis I mission successfully launched last week after several cancellations due to fuel tank and safety issues detected at the last minute. When launched using the SLS rocket it carried the cargo of the Orion space capsule which contained only a statue of the astronaut. After a few days of launch, Orion has successfully orbited the moon.
Using control rockets, Orion managed to orbit the moon at an altitude of about 81 miles from its original orbit of 328 miles. This maneuver was already planned to see if the rocket system was capable of changing Orion's course to land on the moon in a future Artemis mission.
Orion will then orbit the moon for a week to perform various system tests before the control rocket is fired to take it into orbit 57,250 miles from the moon. Then the rocket is turned on again for it to return to the moon and with the help of gravity will be thrown back to earth on December 11 next.
All of Artemis' initial missions are to test the launch system, life support, capsule and mission profile before the actual mission lands humans back on the lunar surface by 2025.
