1. Make sure your device is linked to the Google account where the backup is stored.

2. Install and open WhatsApp

3. Then, verify your phone number

4. After the recovery process is complete, select 'CONTINUE'

Besides the Google Drive way, there is another way for iPhone users. You can use iCloud to restore chats on WA.


Restore from iCloud backup

For those of you iPhone users, you can use iCloud to restore or restore chat history that you have previously backed up, here are the steps:


1. Make sure you have an iCloud backup in the WA app, 'Settings' > 'Chat' > 'Chat Backup'

2. Uninstall the WhatsApp application

3. Reinstall WA and log back in

2. Open internal storage or SD card, 'WhatsApp' > 'Database'

3. Copy the latest backup file to the Database folder

4. Install and open WA, verify the phone number

5. Click 'Restore', and make sure to restore chats and media from local backup

6. Done.


Restoring from an old (not newest) local backup

The way to restore the old version of the WA chat file is as follows:


1. Open the File Manager application on your cellphone

2. Open internal storage or SD card, 'WhatsApp' > 'Database'

3. Rename the backup file you want to restore, from the file named 'msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12' using 'msgstore.db.crypt12'

4. It is possible that the old backup file still uses an older version of the protocol, such as crypt9 or crypt10. Remember, don't change the crypt extension number.

5. Uninstall and reinstall the WA application on your cellphone

6. Open WA and login as usual

7. Select 'Restore' when prompted

8. Done
