Apple Will Allow Sideloading Applications From Outside the App Store

The world is changing and one of the most surprising changes is Apple complying with the directive of the European Union (EU) to allow the installation of applications from outside the App Store ecosystem. According to a Bloomberg report this morning, Apple is preparing to allow not only the installation of applications from third-party application stores but also as sideloads on iPhones and iPads.

This is to meet the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) which requires application producers to allow users to choose from where they want to get the desired application by March 6, 2024. Tim Cook once said allowing sideloading poses a high security and privacy risk before and opposed it.

Another thing that DMA directs is to allow cross-platform message transmission between users. This in turn could force Apple to allow iMessage to receive messages from WhatsApp for example. Europe is one of Apple's main markets so they have to comply with the authorities' instructions. Starting in 2024, it is also very likely that the iPhone will also use USB-C due to the directive issued by the EU this year.
