The popularity of ChatGPT makes many people think that artificial intelligence (AI) based chatbots will beat search engines like Google. Google employees also wonder if the company also has a ChatGPT competitor.
In an internal meeting, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Google's Head of AI Jeff Dean opened up about the popularity of ChatGPT. One employee even asked if the launch of ChatGPT was an opportunity missed by Google.
Pichai and Dean answered that Google actually has an AI model with capabilities similar to ChatGPT. But they need to move more carefully because if the system is launched and there are problems, then Google's reputation could be threatened.
“We really want to release these things into real products and into things that can model language more prominently than behind the scenes, which is where we've been using it at the moment,” said Dean, as quoted by The Verge. , Sunday (18/12/2022).
"But it's very important we get this right."
Pichai added that Google already has many plans for AI features in 2023. He said this is an area where Google must be reckless but still responsible.
Google itself has developed several AI models whose capabilities are equivalent to ChatGPT. Some of them are LaMDA, BERT, and MUM which are all used to improve search results on Google Search.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT is a creation of OpenAI, a startup founded by Elon Musk and supported by Microsoft. Even though it has been touted as a replacement for Google, ChatGPT still has many limitations, including providing inaccurate information or answers.
In Google's internal meeting, Dean also acknowledged the challenges faced by AI chatbots such as ChatGPT. He said there are several important things that must be considered including factuality, bias, and security.
"AI can make stuff up. If they're not too sure about something, they'll just say, you know elephants are the biggest egg laying animals or whatever," Dean said with a laugh.
