Apple is known to be diligent in injecting funds into component supply companies and product assemblers. Apart from China, Apple also has a lot of investment in Japan.
Over the past five years, Apple has injected funds of more than USD 100 billion into various companies in Japan, almost 1,000 companies to be precise. This was said by Apple CEO Tim Cook while visiting Japan.
Cook visited Kumamoto prefecture in Southwestern Japan, which is home to many semiconductor factories, including one being built by TSMC.
In its statement, Apple claims that it has increased funding injections to suppliers in Japan by more than 30% since 2019. Fund injections have been made to nearly 1,000 companies at various levels, from multi-national to home-based businesses.
One of Apple's biggest suppliers from Japan is Sony, which supplies camera sensors for iPhones. There are also textile companies, Ribbon Industry and Shincron, which are print makers.
According to Apple, there are currently 29 of its suppliers that have committed to using renewable energy by 2030, including Sony, Murata, Fujikura and Sumitomo, as quoted by us from Reuters, Tuesday (13/12/2022).
Apple also previously pressured its production partners to start diversifying outside of China. Foxconn, for example, chose India and Vietnam for iPhone factory locations, and started injecting funds into these countries, for example USD 500 million for its Indian subsidiary.
The injection of funds was given to Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Limited through their Singapore subsidiary. namely through the purchase of more than 4 billion shares, as listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.
This investment was made by Foxconn after the Zhengzhou factory in China, which is the largest iPhone factory in the world, was abandoned by tens of thousands of workers after a demonstration that ended in chaos last November, and resulted in factories not being able to operate optimally.
