Netflix Will Start Blocking Password Sharing Starting 2023

 


This year Netflix introduced an additional fee to add a profile to a customer's account. Typically there are only four slots for each account. In order to eradicate the problem of password sharing between users who live in different residences, an additional fee of around RM13 for an additional profile in Latin American countries.



According to the WSJ report, Netflix will expand the program to add this profile to the United States starting in 2023. This may then be expanded to the global level as well. The profile addition test to prevent password sharing has been done since last July. Netflix tracks the IP and account location used. When detecting that the account was accessed from two different locations for the past period, the customer will be notified to add a profile with an additional fee.


Netflix has been encouraging password sharing in order to increase the number of subscribers to their service. But with increased competition from Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+ and more causing subscriber numbers to drop for the first time a few quarters ago.
