Oppo Announces the MariSilicon Y Chip, Promises Lossless Audio via Bluetooth

Oppo is again holding the Inno Day event at the end of 2022. This time Oppo is showing off several new technologies that will be launched in the near future, one of which is the MariSilicon Y chip.

This chip is the second product in the MariSilicon family. If MariSilicon X, which was launched last year, is an ISP for photos and videos in low light conditions, MariSilicon Y is designed to deliver lossless audio via Bluetooth.

"At Oppo we developed the chipset in-house because we wanted to use key technologies to solve key problems to maximize the user experience," said Oppo Senior Product Manager Neal Chen in a virtual media briefing.

"If you look at open market chipsets, especially for Bluetooth chipsets, they don't support up to 192 kHz/24 bit, and lossless audio, so MariSilicon Y is designed to solve this problem because open market chipsets don't support this feature," he continued.

As Chen mentioned, MariSilicon Y supports ultra clear 192 kHz/24 bit lossless audio via Bluetooth. This chipset manages to increase Bluetooth data bandwidth by 50% up to 12 Mbps.

This chipset is made using advanced processing technology N6RF by TSMC. This processing is claimed to provide transceiver power efficiency of up to 66% and a transceiver size that is 33% smaller.

Oppo also created a special codec for MariSilicon Y, namely the Ultra Resolution Lossless Codec (URLC) with a higher compression rate. In addition, MariSilicon Y is also equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU) to provide audio experiences that can be personalized using artificial intelligence.

The NPU is capable of processing up to 590 GOPS. Thanks to this NPU, MariSilicon Y can offer several features for spatial audio personalization, including Music Extraction which can isolate certain sounds such as vocals, drums, bass and other instruments.

Chen said MariSilicon Y already supports hi-res audio offered by several streaming platforms including Apple Music and Amazon Music. This chip will debut in Oppo devices in 2023.
