Rolls Royce Completes Construction of World's Largest Jet Engine Using Sustainable Fuels

Airplanes are the most polluting public transportation system in the world. The carbon footprint of one passenger for a single transcontinental flight is greater than the carbon footprint of a third world resident. Various efforts are being made by the aeronautical industry to reduce pollution. Rolls Royce as one of the world's leading engine manufacturers has completed the installation of the largest jet engine ever produced.

The Rolls Royce UltraFan engine has a diameter of 3.5 meters which surpasses the previous record holder General Electric GE90. With the new design, the efficiency of the UltraFan engine is up to 25% compared to the current Rolls Royce Trent engine. This in turn reduces fuel consumption by up to 10% on aircraft that use it.

But the UltraFan is most unique because it is the first designed specifically to use entirely sustainable fuels. Until greener fuels are developed, the use of engines with higher efficiency and the use of sustainable fuels are temporary solutions.
