Samsung Mobile Reportedly Will Form Its Own Chip Development Team

Samsung will use the full Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip on the Galaxy S23 series. The action was taken after last year's Exynos 2200 chip presented various issues and did not have performance comparable to the Snapdragon chip. Then Samsung Mobile said they will start developing Exynos chips designed specifically for Galaxy devices for the first time.

According to The Elec report, to enable this chip Samsung Mobile will form its own chip development team. With a team from within, Samsung Mobile's demand and need for a standalone Exynos chip can be done more efficiently. The team will be led by Choi Won-joon who previously worked at Qualcomm.

Without high orders of Exynos chips for Galaxy devices as well as other manufacturers not using Samsung's foundry, the company posted lower profits than the previous year.

Exynos chips can reduce costs for Samsung Mobile and more importantly put them on par with Apple which develops its own chips according to specific specifications. In previous reports, a new generation Exynos chip specifically for the Galaxy is expected to be launched in 2025.
