Samsung Prepares Exynos Successor Processor, Why?

Apart from using a system on a chip (SoC) -- often called a processor -- made by Qualcomm, Mediatek, and the like, Samsung also has its own SoC, namely Exynos. But reportedly, Samsung is preparing another SoC to replace Exynos.

Exynos is a SoC made by a division called System LSI, but for the successor SoC it will be made in a new team under the Mobile eXperience (MX) division, which is the division that actually oversees Samsung's HP business.

In other words, the Exynos successor will be designed by a team under the same umbrella as Samsung's HP design team, much the same as Apple did with the A series chip and Google did with the Tensor chip.

Reporting from Phone Arena, citing a source from The Elec, the team will be led by Choi Won-Joon, Executive VP Samsung who is also Head of MX Development. Choi has been with Samsung since 2016, having previously worked at Qualcomm, and is known as a wireless chip expert.

Why did Samsung even create a new team to do basically the same task as System LSI? The Elec's source said that the main reason was that Samsung was not satisfied with the current performance of the Exynos. In other words, Samsung plans to replace the existing Exynos with a new SoC built with the team.

Reportedly, the unsatisfactory performance is in the efficiency sector, including the heat generated by the Exynos chip, and of course the overall performance.

Even so, it seems that this Exynos successor chip may not be released in the near future. Because reportedly, the new chip will be used the fastest in the Galaxy S25.

Oh yes, it is said that System LSI will continue to operate but its focus has changed, namely making chips for motorized vehicles.
