Shamate Subculture, China's Most Hated 'Jamet'

Talking about culture, there are so many subcultures like Jamet in various countries. If we have already discussed the issue of La Sape in Africa, now we will turn to China.

In China, there is a subculture called Shamate. Shamate is known for his eccentric appearance, with hair that tapers up, expands and is accompanied by a bright hair color.

Launching Buzz Feed, Shamate is taken from the English absorption word 'smart' which means 'smart'. The founder of Shamate is believed to be a man named Luo Fuxing. As for how to dress, Shamate has various ways to dress up. Their appearance can be themed gothic, glam rock as well as adopting anime elements.

The origin of the Shamates

In terms of work, Shamate actually has various backgrounds regarding the livelihoods of its members. However, most of them are factory workers.

Well, factory work is hard and takes up a lot of time making factory workers start to lack a source of entertainment. From there they realized, by doing hair styling, it could make them more confident. It was from here that the Shamate subculture began to develop and expand.

Shamate is despised in China

Shamate members have a variety of ways to stay connected. For online networking, Shamate has its own forum. As for offline gatherings, they are usually held every weekend (Sunday) by gathering in the park with quirky hairstyles.

Even though they only want to express themselves and exist, Shamate is in fact not liked in China. Some media in China and abroad write them as 'those who dropped out of school' regardless of their ability which is actually quite sharp in the world of fashion.

Furthermore, since most of them are from the countryside, many sneer at the Shamates because of their accent. This teasing then spread to the way they dress, their taste in music, to the matters of their dancing style.

Also, in fact, Shamate is a group of people who just want to express themselves and gather people with the same fate. Until finally, the discrimination experienced by Shamate members in China made some people stop being Shamates. Some of them are still trying to preserve the Shamate subculture with other members whom they consider to be their own brothers.
