Last year Dell showed the Concept Luna laptop which was designed to not only simplify the process to repair but also to recycle it after it is no longer used. This is achieved by reducing the use of screws and glue. Last weekend Dell further improved the Concept Luna to make it easier to uninstall.
After a year the use of screws and glue was successfully reduced again. According to Dell, the Concept Luna can now be completely disassembled by trained workers in minutes instead of hours. The uninstall process becomes faster with the help of a robot in the recycle bin. What Dell is doing is similar to what Apple did through the Daisy robot from 2018.
Concept Luna is also equipped with a telemetry system that predicts when components such as the motherboard need to be replaced. For example the keyboard may not be used if the owner is using the Concept Luna in dock mode connected to an external keyboard. With this when recycled, only the motherboard is recycled while the keyboard can be processed into a like-new spare part.
At this time Concept Luna is still just a concept and it is seen as one of the solutions to the global electronic waste dumping issue.
