Toyota Modified Gasoline Engine To Use Hydrogen Fuel

The issue with electric vehicles is that they require a new platform which means that existing fossil fuel cars cannot be easily modified. Millions of old cars will end up if the ban on fossil fuel vehicles is enforced and this is quite a waste. Toyota this week showed the Corolla Cross H2 Concept vehicle that uses a regular gasoline engine that can use hydrogen fuel.

The existing GR Corolla's 1.6-liter 3-cylinder engine has been modified to burn compressed hydrogen fuel. To enable hydrogen to be used, a high-pressure injection system was used. The result of combustion is only heat and water without the poisonous gas of carbon monoxide if gasoline is used.

The vehicle can carry 5 passengers comfortably. Toyota says the prototype is only about 40% complete at this time with efforts underway to commercialize it in their production vehicles.

Green hydrogen is one of the alternative fuels to produce more environmentally friendly vehicles. BEV vehicles are already facing the problem of battery prices which are now getting more expensive and the impact of nickel and lithium mining is actually higher than expected.
