Twitter Blocks Competitor's Official Mastodon Account, What's Up?

Twitter suspended the official account of Mastodon, one of its competitors which became the destination for exodus of former Twitter users. This suspension seems to be related to the @ElonJet case which infuriated Twitter CEO Elon Musk.

If you visit Mastodon's profile with the username @joinmastodon, a statement will appear that the account has been suspended. Before being suspended, it seems that Mastodon had uploaded a link for the @ElonJet account on its platform.

Mastodon's account was suspended on Thursday (15/12) yesterday. According to the archives at The Wayback Machine, the account was active at 12:39 p.m. Eastern time, and was then suspended at 6:12 p.m. local time.

In the archive when the profile was still active, Mastodon was seen uploading a tweet inviting his followers to follow the @ElonJet account on Mastodon.

The @ElonJet account was recently blocked by Twitter after it posted flight information for Elon Musk's private plane using publicly available air traffic data. The account is managed by student Jack Sweeney whose personal account was also banned by Twitter.

In addition to blocking Mastodon accounts, Twitter also seems to be prohibiting users from uploading links for various Mastodon servers. As an open source platform, Mastodon consists of multiple servers managed by individuals who can make their own rules.

If a Twitter user wants to post a tweet containing the Mastodon server link, they will receive an error warning. According to a report by The Verge, Twitter has blocked links for the original server mastodon.social and dozens of other domains.

"We are unable to complete this request because this link has been identified by Twitter or our partners as potentially harmful," Twitter said in its warning, as quoted by The Verge, Friday (16/12/2022).
