The Spaces Twitter feature which is a clone of Clubhouse has been shut down for no reason tonight. On the Twitter app, the microphone icon for Spaces is no longer visible in the middle of the bottom tray and it is also no longer rendered on the Twitter version.
At the time of writing Twitter has yet to provide a reason why this popular feature was suddenly turned off. But speculation says it is to prevent Twitter users from accessing the recording of a Spaces attended by Elon Musk earlier today.
The topic discussed the actions of Twitter to suspend the accounts of several journalists who wrote stories about Musk. Musk tried to defend this Twitter action but when he was pressed with a question from one of the suspended journalists he was unable to give a convincing answer. Spaces also still allows suspended accounts to join discussion sessions without any hindrance.
A few days ago Twitter changed the site's terms and conditions disallowing accounts that provide the location of other users in real time. Immediate suspension will be given if this is done. Among the victims of the suspension is @ElonJet who shared the location of Musk's private plane.
Previously Musk promised to be a champion of freedom of speech which he said was blocked on Twitter. But Twitter's actions of mass suspending certain accounts and reinstating Donald Trump were seen as hypocritical actions from Musk.
*Updated – Twitter Spaces is now accessible again about two hours ago.
