Foldable or foldable screen cellphones are now increasingly popular with brands such as Samsung, Oppo and Huawei vying to launch their newest products. Even though it's not yet mainstream, sales of folding screen cellphones are predicted to sell well this year.
According to a report from DSCC, shipments of foldable screen phones will increase by 33% by 2023, reaching 17 million units. This is due to the increasing number of competitors in the folding screen mobile phone market which makes the competition even more passionate.
The report also reports that sales of Samsung's foldable screen phones will meet expectations in the third quarter of 2022, where the South Korean vendor dominates 85% of the foldable market and ships 5.2 million units of devices.
But for the fourth quarter, Samsung's folding screen cellphone shipments are predicted to decrease by 50% compared to the previous quarter, and down 36% from the same period in the previous year with sales of 2.6 million units.
Samsung's share of the foldable phone market is forecast to drop to 82% in the fourth quarter of 2022, but this is its first year-on-year decline, as quoted by Gizmochina, Tuesday (3/1/2023).
The North American market, especially the United States, is one of the main problems that makes Samsung's market share fall in the fourth quarter of 2022. The US accounts for 29% of Samsung's foldable screen phone sales in 2021, but that figure will drop to 7% in the fourth quarter of 2022 .
The report also predicts Samsung's market share will fall again in the first and second quarters of 2023, even dropping below 50% in the second quarter due to tougher competition from existing players and new entrants such as Google.
However, the DSCC predicts that the folding screen cellphone market will still be crowded. Apart from Samsung with the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip lines, there will be the Oppo Find N2 Flip which is certain to launch on the global market.
