Google just announced the layoffs of 12,000 employees globally. Of the tens of thousands of employees affected, there are dozens of massage therapists who have also been laid off.
Giant technology companies like Google do offer a number of attractive benefits and perks in their offices, including free meals and snacks to stand-by massage therapists in the office.
In documents released by the California state government, it was revealed that 15% of all employees who were laid off -- 1,845 positions -- were Google employees based in California.
The 1,436 employees who were laid off worked at Google headquarters in Mountain View, 119 at YouTube's San Bruno office, while 53 employees worked at their Palo Alto office. In Los Angeles, 177 Google employees lost their jobs and Irvine's 60.
More than a quarter of positions affected by layoffs in the state of California have the titles 'director' and 'senior' in their titles. But there are also dozens of massage therapists who have been affected.
According to the report, there are 27 massage therapists hired by Google who have also been laid off, of which 24 are in their Mountain View offices and three are in Los Angeles and Irvine.
In his announcement, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said all employees affected by layoffs would receive six months plus two weeks of severance pay for each year they worked at Google.
Bonuses for 2022 and the employee's remaining leave allowance will also be paid. In addition, Google provides six months of support for healthcare, job placement services, and immigration support.
Pichai also announced that all executives above senior vice president will receive a significant reduction in their annual bonus. He added that employees with senior positions will receive compensation related to the company's performance.
