Last year Apple offered iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models with a screen hole called Dynamic Island. Gone is the large notch replaced by a hole for the Face ID camera system. According to The Elec, Dynamic Island will be retained on the iPhone 15 Pro and will only change to an under-screen camera system starting with the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024.
Only the selfie camera will be retained in a smaller hole as found on current Android devices. Depending on the maturity of the under-screen camera technology, Apple will eventually put both the Face ID system and the selfie camera under the screen in the future.
UDC under-screen camera technology has been introduced on Android devices for the past few years. Until now only a few manufacturers offer it because the quality of the pictures taken is still not satisfactory enough. Improvements in software processing capabilities and OLED panels that let in more light are needed to enable UDCs to completely replace current selfie camera systems.
