There are several wireless charging formats on the market right now with Qi being the most popular with support on a variety of devices such as Apple, Samsung and Google. It is still quite slow with a maximum power of only 15W. But now Apple and the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) are reportedly developing a new format dubbed Qi2.
Qi2 received Apple's help to develop with it based on MagSafe technology. Other WPC members can use the Qi2 Magnetic Power Profile format on their own devices and magnetic chargers. The official Qi2 launch date will be in the future with the first accessories that pass the Qi2 standard going on sale later this year.
There is no information about the power output but for sure it will be higher than the current 15W. Standardizing the charging format will make it easier for users to purchase their wireless charging accessories in the future and also mean that MagSafe accessories can be used on Android devices without any issues.
