The cold war between Spotify and Apple that has been going on for the past few years is now heating up. Spotify, Deezer, Proton, Basecamp, Schibsted, France Digitale, News Media Europe and the European Publishers Council have sent a letter to the executive vice-president of the European Commission (EC) asking that Apple's alleged anti-competitive business practices end.
Among the allegations of anti-competitive practices carried out by Apple are charging a high subscription fee deduction, the need to use the App Store payment system and advertising its own application compared to other applications in the App Store. Last October, Spotify claimed that Apple was still engaging in anti-competitive business practices for making it difficult to buy audiobooks.
The European Union will enforce the Digital Markets Act (DMA) to ban certain practices used by large platforms to keep users in their ecosystems.
Through the DMA as well, the EU will ensure cross-platform delivery support on popular messaging applications of major technology companies such as Google, Meta, Apple, and Microsoft. The definition of a major technology company is one with at least 45 million monthly users and a market capitalization of more than €75 billion.
