Samsung is said to be launching a new chip called a "Galaxy custom chip" at the launch of the Galaxy S23.
This rumor was spread by Ice Universe, which usually has accurate information, through its Twitter account. The launch of the Galaxy S23 itself will reportedly occur on February 1, after Samsung Estonia accidentally confirmed the launch date.
According to Ice Universe, this particular Galaxy chip will be explained by TM Roh, President & Head of MX Business, Samsung Electronics at the launch event for the Galaxy S23.
This chip is called exclusive and is specifically for Samsung devices, designed by Samsung and assumed to be manufactured by the Samsung Foundry, we were quoted as saying from Phone Arena, Monday (9/1/2023).
Last April, TM Roh said that Samsung would make a chip that would only be used in Galaxy phones. Then a month later Ice Universe said that Samsung is planning a special processor that will be used in the Galaxy S25 released in 2025.
If you look at the history of the Galaxy S series, Samsung has always used Exynos chips as the brains of its flagship phones, except for phones released in North America and China.
But now that tradition is changing and the Galaxy S series only uses chips from Qualcomm, and for the Galaxy S23, it is likely a special version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 produced at the Samsung Foundry.
Previously there was also information that stated that Samsung was indeed preparing a successor to Exynos, which was designed under the Mobile eXperience division, the division that oversees Samsung's cellphone business.
In other words, the Exynos successor will be designed by a team under the same umbrella as Samsung's HP design team, much the same as Apple did with the A series chip and Google did with the Tensor chip.
Reporting from Phone Arena, citing a source from The Elec, the team will be led by Choi Won-Joon, Executive VP Samsung who is also Head of MX Development. Choi has been with Samsung since 2016, having previously worked at Qualcomm, and is known as a wireless chip expert.
Why did Samsung even create a new team to do basically the same task as System LSI? The Elec's source said that the main reason was that Samsung was not satisfied with the current performance of the Exynos. In other words, Samsung plans to replace the existing Exynos with a new SoC built with the team.
Reportedly, the unsatisfactory performance is in the efficiency sector, including the heat generated by the Exynos chip, and of course the overall performance.
