Nokia is a well-known telecommunications infrastructure company, and has long been the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer. If the meaning of the name Nokia, do many already know?
Let's look at a little history of Nokia. Nokia was founded in 1865 or more than a century ago, by a Finnish and Swedish engineer, Fredrik Idestam. Initially, Nokia was a pulp manufacturing company near the city of Tampere, Finland.
As we quote from Tech Spit, the second factory opened in 1868 near the first factory, in a town called Nokia. Well, this is where the name Nokia comes from, namely from the city where it was founded.
In 1871, Idestam and a friend named Leo Mechelin, founded a joint venture and called it Nokia, based on the location of their factories.
Well, the meaning of the name Nokia itself is not really certain. In modern Finnish, noki means soot and Nokia is the plural, although it is used very rarely.
The most common theory is that the name Nokia may come from an old Finnish word, namely nois or nokinaata, which means a kind of small weasel. After the animal became extinct, the word was applied to animals with black fur.
However, in subsequent research, it is said that the small weasel never inhabited Finland, so the name nois probably refers to the otter.
So, the meaning of the name Nokia does not refer to various things. Unlike the case with Samsung which means three stars or Xiaomi is small rice. Maybe it's because Nokia has been established for so long that its creators didn't really think about the meaning of a name.
