TikTok Tightens Filtering of Porn Content

TikTok is rolling out a new rating system called Content Levels in early 2022, to help identify more pornographic content. Now, filtering adult content is getting tighter.

The social media from China released a new version of its 'borderline suggestive model' which apps use to automatically identify sexually explicit, suggestive or borderline content.

"This new model is better able to detect what's called 'borderline content,' videos that don't explicitly violate the app's rules, but may not be suitable for younger users," said a TikTok spokesperson.

TikTok isn't the only platform that screens this type of content from recommendations. Instagram has been known to have been working on removing borderline content from its recommendations for a long time.

Content with more mature themes but not containing explicit nudity has long been a problem because it is more difficult to detect consistently by automated systems.

It's not clear exactly how accurate the new system is. TikTok claims that in the past 30 days it has worked to prevent teen accounts from viewing more than 1 million sexually suggestive videos.
