A one-eyed baby is born in Yemen. His presence in the world was only seven hours, but much attention has been paid to him until now. This baby boy has only one eye socket and one optic nerve. He was born in March 2022.
Journalist from Yemen, Karim Zarai, was the person who first uploaded the baby's photo to cyberspace and immediately went viral. The baby was born in Al Bayda, Central Yemen.
"This is a rare case known in Greek mythology," said Zarai, as written by Gulf News.
However, just born to Earth, this tiny baby can only survive for seven hours before finally breathing its last. It is not known exactly why the baby died.
The condition of babies born with one eye in the medical world is known as cyclopia. This is a deformed condition that is considered to be one of the rarest in the world.
Cyclopia is also known as alobar holoprosencephaly. This health condition usually occurs in 1 in 100 thousand newborns.
Launching Healthline, cyclopia occurs when the forebrain does not divide completely. Often, this condition causes miscarriage or stillbirth. Because, not only because they have one eye, babies born with this condition usually have other health problems due to malformations of the baby's brain from the beginning of pregnancy.
However, no one knows for sure the cause of cyclopia. Some experts attribute it to radiation, but there is also speculation that exposure to chemicals or poisons is the culprit of this problem.
