With API Extension SDK Google Wants to Provide New Android 13 Features on Old Android Versions

Every year someone complains because their Android device no longer receives update support from the manufacturer. Normally support is only given for two years. Owners can simply look forward to a new device using the latest Android version with enhanced features. This week Google launched API Extension SDK with the aim of providing features on Android 13 to devices with Android 11 and above.

According to Google, since introducing Project Mainline on Android 10, various operating system features are modular and can be updated separately through the Play Store without waiting for an operating system update. The Extension SDK will enable more Android 13 features such as PhotoPicker to be provided to Android 11 and above devices.

Another example given is the support of ID cards and digital driver's licenses in Google Wallet. With the Extension SDK application developers can include new features in applications targeting users of older devices.
