4 Controversial Experiments that Shocked the World

There are quite a lot of controversial experiments in this world. History records it. While science and knowledge are great things to explore, there are ethical codes and other social issues that need attention.

The following are a number of experiments that have led to public outcry:

1. Monkey mix piglet

For the first time, two piglets mixed with monkey DNA were born in China in 2019. This research was developed by a team of scientists from the Bamboo Curtain country.

Sadly, the two piglets only lived for a week before dying, even though both were in normal condition. This research has come under fire from the scientific community, who argue that creating chimeras (genetic admixture) is an ethical issue.

2. Genetically engineered babies

China has stopped research by a scientist who claimed to have created the world's first genetically modified baby. The Chinese government will investigate the research.

It was Professor He Jiankui who claimed to have changed the embryonic DNA of a pair of twin girls named Lulu and Nana, with the intention of preventing both of them from contracting HIV. This experiment led him to court on the grounds of 'illegal medical practice' and was sentenced to 3 years in prison, citing Science Mag.

3. Double-headed dog operation

In 1948, Dr. Vladimir Demikhov conducted an experiment that shocked the world. After 23 attempts, on the 24th try he managed to combine two dogs.

Demikhov chose two different subjects, a German Shepard named Brodyaga and a small dog he named Shavka. The procedure makes Brodyaga the host and Shavka will be the neck and head supply dog who will attach to the host.

Sadly, these two poor dogs were only able to survive for four days, as reported by Medium.

4. Drug scandal and dolphin sexual attraction

The controversy over research funded by NASA and scientists who administered LSD was also not without public criticism. Of course this violates the code of ethics. The scientist, who originally intended to teach the dolphins English, instead took drugs that usually cause hallucinations.

Not only that, a male dolphin named Peter showed sexual interest in one of the research members with an erection that occurred. This controversial research has come to nothing -- until now dolphins cannot make human sounds.
