The presence of ChatGPT shows that artificial intelligence (AI) is getting smarter. But according to Elon Musk, AI that is getting smarter actually needs to be watched out for.
While speaking at the World Government Summit event in Dubai, Musk was asked his opinion on the development of AI technology in the next 10 years. He replied that AI is a promising technology but can also be dangerous.
"One of the biggest threats to the future of civilization is AI," Musk said, as quoted by CNBC, Saturday (18/2/2023).
"This (technology) is both positive and negative and very, very promising and has great capabilities," he continued. But he emphasized that behind this ability there is a great danger.
Musk revealed several problems related to the progress of AI, one of which is that there are no regulations governing the development of AI. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO said regulation might slow AI progress but that could be a positive thing.
"I think we should regulate AI security, frankly. I think this is actually a bigger threat to society than cars or planes or drugs," Musk said.
Musk's warning is not surprising considering that he has several times expressed his concerns about the sophistication of AI. Interestingly, Musk himself is a co-founder of OpenAI, the AI startup that developed ChatGPT.
However, the former richest man in the world is no longer involved with OpenAI after leaving its board of directors in 2018 and no longer holds shares in the company.
"Initially (OpenAI) was created as an open source non-profit. Now it is closed-source and for-profit. I do not own open stock in OpenAI, nor am I a member of the board of directors, nor do I control it in any way," he concluded.
