Facebook and Instagram Unblock Donald Trump, Here's the Reason

Former United States President Donald Trump has officially returned to Facebook and Instagram. Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts were first banned two years ago following the riots at the US Capitol on January 6, 2023.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said last month it would lift the ban on Trump's account in a matter of weeks. Now the social media giant has kept his promise, as quoted from Gizmodo, Friday (10/2/2023).

In his announcement last month, Meta's President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg said the company believes Trump's account is no longer at the same high threat risk it used to be.

Clegg also revealed that the accounts of Trump and other public figures must comply with stricter rules. If it violates the community guidelines again, Meta will remove the offending post and Trump's account may be banned for a month to two years.

Even though the block has been lifted, Trump still hasn't posted any content on Facebook and Instagram. Likewise with his account on Twitter which was restored by Elon Musk in November 2022.

Since being banned from a series of mainstream social media two years ago, Trump has chosen to upload his thoughts on Truth Social, a social media platform managed by the Trump Media & Technology Group. Truth Social also has semi-exclusive rights to Trump's content.

Currently, Trump has more than 34 million followers on Facebook and 23.4 million followers on Instagram. On Twitter, Trump has more than 87.6 million followers.

Trump's last post on Instagram before being banned contained an invitation to his followers to attend the 'Save America March' at the Capitol Building, USA on January 6, 2021. Meanwhile, his last post on Facebook asked his followers who were at the Capitol Building to remain peaceful.
