GM Patented Automatic Dirt-Cleaning Touch Screen For Vehicles

Touchscreens on smartphones, tablets, and computers have been trapping dirt and fingerprints for centuries. Although an oleophobic layer is used, this hereditary issue has not yet been resolved. General Motors has patented a new system that cleans dirt on touch screens automatically.

Through the patent document, the touch screen used in the vehicle will be equipped with a fourth LED light in addition to red, green and blue. This fourth LED lamp emits ultra violet (UV) light. When the screen wants to be cleaned, the UV LED will turn on. It will dissolve the oil layer on the fingerprint and dirt on the surface of the screen while cleaning it.

The surface of the screen that was previously hydrophobic will become hydrophilic for a while to absorb water molecules. After cleaning, the UV LED lamp is turned off and the screen becomes hydrophobic again. This cleaning system can be activated by the vehicle owner when needed or automatically turned on at night when the vehicle is not in use.
