Malaysia Aims to Have 4000 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations This Year

The country's electrification plan is now becoming clearer after the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) announced the country's target of having 4000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by the end of 2023. At the time there were only 900 EV vehicle charging stations nationwide.

At the same time the target is to have 10,000 EV charging stations placed by 2025 with 1000 of the DC type and 9000 of the AC type that offer slower charging. Under the Low Carbon Mobility Development Plan 2021-2030, Malaysia aims for EVs and hybrid vehicles to account for at least 15 percent of the total industry volume (TIV) by 2030.

The number of EV vehicle chargers is still low when compared to the tens of thousands of fossil fuel pumps at thousands of gas stations across the country. Despite a slow start, more and more charging stations have been opened at PETRONAS and Shell gas stations lately with efforts also being made by companies such as Tenaga Nasional and Gentari.
