Review – Oppo Reno8 T 5G Continues the Legacy With a Bigger Camera

Last year Oppo introduced the Reno8 series including for the Malaysian market. There are three model variations available which include Oppo Reno8, Reno8 Pro and Reno8 Z 5G. With the same focus, all devices feature attractive mobile imaging systems with diverse features and functions.

Continuing the legacy, the Oppo Reno8 T 5G was introduced this year with a 108MP high-resolution camera, the first used in their Reno series. But the processing used is similar to the previous Reno8 Z 5G. Is it worth it for you to get this device? Let's have a look through the review article below.

In terms of design, the Oppo Reno8 T 5G makes a difference with a fully curved device with a plastic body and an aluminum frame. The sides of the device are also rounded to provide long-lasting comfort when held in the hand. We also had no problem handling it as it was very comfortable in the hand or kept in a trouser pocket. All of them are simply pleasing to the eye with a modern and minimalist look that uses shiny materials. For example, like the Reno8 T Sunrise Gold with the Oppo Glow design that we shared in the first look article.

It uses a diamond-like shimmering dual-matte finish that is quite beautiful. The reflected color can also vary according to the viewing angle. Even so, this does not mean that other color options are not attractive to our eyes. The Reno8 T Midnight Black that we received for this review article is also still beautiful to the eye. It's just that the theme here is more minimalistic with all-black without the ability to change color reflections. The back panel is also a kind of glossy matte.

Furthermore, this back panel also shows two camera bumps with a tri-camera system for both devices. One large lens dominates the camera bump at the top with two more lenses placed separately in the bump below.

The standard button layout is placed in an easy-to-reach position. The power button can be found on the right side. The left side houses the audio adjustment buttons with a solid construction. The SIM slot position is at the bottom without the microSD card. A USB-C port and a speaker can also be found on the same side.

No hole for 3.5mm audio jack found on the device being the most noticeable shortcoming. At the same time forcing users to spend extra money to get additional accessories or wireless earphones.

Overall the design of these two devices is simple, practical and balanced with the presence of premium device criteria. The design of the two camera bumps has also been slightly modified compared to some previous devices to make it neater. Dear a thousand times dear, the device also does not pass any waterproof rating making close care very necessary.

Screen Performance

The front screen is entirely from the AMOLED panel family with FHD+ resolution. At the same time, the balanced bezel size on all four sides also feels suitable for users who crave symmetry. There is also a high refresh rate of 120Hz given but it definitely results in a lot of battery usage on the device. It can however be overcome with the standard feature (60Hz) through a setting that allows the screen to only work at a rate of 60Hz all the time. This helps save battery and allows the device to be used longer.

As can be expected from an AMOLED type panel, the screen certainly has good contrast, color reproduction and viewing angles. This experience is improved when the screen also has 10-bit color depth support that can display up to 1.07 billion colors. The 120Hz refresh rate capability also works well in providing a smooth scrolling experience without extreme issues. It doesn't matter when the device is used for normal daily activities or the first session.

It gets even better when the device also supports stereo speakers with Ultra Volume Mode support. The support is quite interesting which allows the audio level to be increased up to 200%. That's right, you read it right it can reach 200%. Our personal experience found the audio to be louder and clearer than usual. Where the percentage increase cycle involves between 30 – 50% stronger.

Hardware And Software

Oppo Reno8 T 5G runs Android 13 with the latest ColorOS 13 launcher. In general, the ColorOS launcher can be said to have a good reputation in terms of smoothness and ease of use. Most of the built-in features are also well optimized. Next you can also set certain settings according to current needs. Interestingly, battery monitoring and in-depth charging features are also included in-built. This is to allow you to check the battery health just like the experience of an iPhone device.

Next we move to the processor chip, where the Snapdragon 695 with 6nm technology is used. This is paired with 8GB of RAM memory and 256GB of internal storage without microSD card support. If you want more options, the device also supports the Expansion RAM feature with the option of adding 4GB, 6GB and 8GB of RAM virtually. With this, you will have up to 16GB of RAM to allow more applications to be launched simultaneously.

In a week of daily use, we found the device capable of functioning normally without any serious issues. In terms of initial performance, most can be played smoothly and well at medium settings. Next, the issue of extreme heat also does not occur on the device despite being used for the first few sessions. Instead it just becomes lukewarm. Here we also include Geekbench and AntutuBench 3D benchmarks for the device:

Geekbench 5

Oppo Reno8 T 5G – 686 / 2004

Poco X5 Pro 5G – 781 / 2892

Honor X9a 5G – 649 / 1897

Antutu 3D

Oppo Reno8 T 5G – 373,259

Poco X5 Pro 5G – 529,942

Honor X9a 5G – 398,566

Camera Quality

As told before, the camera with a 108MP sensor is one of the main features this time. According to Oppo, this is the first device to use the feature in the Reno series. Then there is no dedicated ultra-wide sensor, instead the device provides two 2MP sensors for depth and a microscope feature with up to 40X zoom. Furthermore there is also a built-in HDR mode that can be activated/deactivated manually if necessary. So what about picture quality?

Most of them can be said to be good in many different situations. For example, pictures taken through a 108MP camera give quite bright and sharp results with vivid colors. The situation is different when the AI Scene Enhancement feature is activated, where it increases the contrast in the picture and makes it brighter with saturated color effects.

This is suitable for those of you who like to take pictures with prominent colors without additional editing. Undoubtedly it still looks nice and good, but not as accurate as the colors that can be seen with the naked eye in the real world.

Next, pictures taken in closed areas become soft. Likewise, photos at night are not as sharp as photos taken in good lighting. Noise problems can also be clearly seen in some situations. This is in stark contrast to the performance of the Reno8 Pro that we have reviewed before. However, this is not fair to compare because the Reno8 Pro has a Marisilicon X ISP chip which is known to focus on low lighting areas. While the Reno8 T was not given support for the additional chip.

Furthermore the 2MP depth camera can be used as usual with acceptable image reproduction. The Protrait Mode function provided can be adjusted accordingly. There is also an AI Color Portrait feature provided, where in parallel the device focuses on portrait shots.

The included microlens feature is also interesting. If you remember, this feature can also be found on one of their flagship devices, the Oppo Find X3 Pro. The difference is that the zoom support on the Reno8T reaches 40X compared to 60X on the Find X3 Pro.

Interesting is interesting. but try you confess. How many of us need this microlens feature in normal daily use? How many people actually use it regularly? Not at all? Thus in our opinion, it feels even better if Oppo replaces it with a dedicated ultra-wide camera that has more functions for users. For example, such as a group photo shoot involving a large group of individuals.

Battery Endurance

The performance of the 4,800mAh battery used is average. Received SOT readings can reach 6 hours with moderate use cycles and a 120Hz screen. All of these involve various activities such as surfing the web, scrolling through social media, taking pictures and playing games for several sessions. Access dependencies involve LTE and Wi-Fi connections.

This durability however depends on the use of each, at the same time it can also be longer if it remains used on standard features with a 60Hz screen all the time. The recharging process takes less than 1 hour using a charger with an output power of 67W. Oppo also provides a charging head with every purchase.

What's In The Box

Here is what was included in the box we received:

1 x Oppo Reno8 T 5G

1 x 67W Charger Head.

1 x USB-A to USB-C Cable.

1 x Silicone Frame.

Conclusion

In general, the Reno8 T 5G is a Reno8 Z repackaged into an improved body size and camera sensor. The performance is moderate with the Snapdragon 695 chip. But the design of the device, which looks modern and stands out, should be able to attract the attention of a number of users. Especially women who often long for something beautiful to look at.

The device is also balanced with camera specifications and battery life at an acceptable level. Should you buy one? The answer depends on the budget because the price is quite high which is RM1,799. The same goes for what you need for a smartphone.

For those interested, you can get it now with a sale price of RM1,799. Or as an option there is also the Reno8 T with 4G support which is cheaper at RM1,399. The difference is that the 4G device uses a MediaTek Helio G99 chip, a larger 5,000mAh battery and a 100MP main camera.
