Samsung Prepares XR Devices to Compete with Apple

Samsung has just launched the Galaxy S23 Series at its first Galaxy Unpacked event this year. But it seems that Samsung still keeps one secret device that will be launched later, namely Extended Reality (XR) products.

The development of the XR headset was revealed directly by the President and Mobile Experience Business of the Samsung Electronics TM Spirit in an interview with The Washington Post. Extended reality itself is a technology that combines virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.

"Many other companies ... have made an announcement about different reality. So we are also making the same preparation, no less than other companies," Roh said, as quoted by The Washington Post.

The Spirit does not give a further explanation of the new XR product from Samsung. But he said this device involved cooperation between Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm.

"For the chipset, it will be a strategic collaboration with Qualcomm. Our hardware," Roh said.

"For the ecosystem, we try to determine what platforms will be used. And in the end, we decided to choose Google," he continued. The Spirit refers to the Android operating system specifically for wearable devices that have never been launched before.

This XR headset project also cooperates with Meta and Microsoft, but Samsung does not explain further. According to rumors that blow, Microsoft canceled Hololens 3 because it prefers the Samsung project.

The spirit says the ecosystem for the XR headset must be prepared before it is launched. He wants to avoid other vendor mistakes that fail to launch a similar product because it does not have mature support.

Samsung itself is not a newcomer to this business. The South Korean company launched a VR gear device in 2015 which relied on mobile phones as a display and computing personnel. Then in 2017, they released HMD Odyssey Mixed Reality headset based on PC.

Interestingly, the announcement of the XR headset from Samsung came in the middle of rumors about the first mixed reality headset from Apple. The device is predicted to launch this spring, with a series of sophisticated technology and exorbitant prices.
