The 'original price' of the iPhone 14 Pro Max turns out to be only USD 454

Counterpoint Research's latest report reveals that the cheapest 'original price' for the iPhone 14 Pro Max variant turns out to be from USD 454 to USD 474. Apple sells this phone starting at USD 1,099.

In a bill of materials (BoM) analysis from Counterpoint Research, the mmWave version of the iPhone 14 Pro Max 128GB costs USD 474, while the sub-6GHz variant costs USD 454.

When compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max BoM, this cost is up 3.7%. But Apple apparently equated the price of the iPhone 13 Pro Max with the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Counterpoint also mentions that the screen, processor and camera system are the most expensive components of all cellphones.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max screen has an increase in the maximum brightness level in HDR mode and has an outdoor mode. Then this screen also supports always on display, which also has an impact on the total production cost.

Meanwhile, the A16 Bionic, which is produced using the 4nm process, has an impact on increasing costs of USD 11 per unit compared to the A15 Bionic, we were quoted as saying from Techspot, Wednesday (15/2/2023).

Meanwhile the new camera system, with a 48MP main camera made by Sony, also has major improvements. Namely, the sensor size is 65% larger and is also equipped with a sensor shift stabilization system. This camera system is an increase in price of around USD 6.30 compared to its predecessor.

But not all components are priced higher than the iPhone 13 Pro Max. For example cellular network components are now cheaper because 5G technology is more widespread.

In total, Counterpoint estimates that the BoM of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is around 42% of the selling price of the cellphone. The difference seems big, but it must be remembered that there are other things that have an impact on the selling price, such as research and research costs, product shipments, and also marketing costs.
