Turkey Rejects Starlink Internet Assistance from Elon Musk, Why?

The Turkish government refused Starlink satellite internet assistance from Elon Musk after a major earthquake rocked the country.

Through tweets on his personal account, Elon Musk said that Space Exploration, one of his companies, could provide the Starlink network in Turkey after the local government gave permission.

"Starlink has not been approved by the Turkish government. SpaceX can ship as soon as it is approved," Musk tweeted.

However, this assistance was rejected by the Turkish government. A senior Turkish government official who declined to give his name, he was grateful for the offer of assistance, but said Turkey had enough satellite capacity.

Turkey admits that it has base stations that operate on batteries, although there are some areas where the electricity network has been cut off, we were quoted as saying by Bloomberg, Tuesday (7/2/2023).

Turkey was rocked by an earthquake measuring 7.8 magnitude on Monday (6/2) in the morning. The quake hit southeastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, and so far more than 4,300 people have been killed and thousands injured by this quake.

The earthquake, which occurred near the city of Gaziantep, was followed by many aftershocks, including one that was almost as strong as the first.

Measuring 7.8 magnitude, the earthquake in Turkey is a major earthquake. This earthquake ruptured about 100 km from the fault line, causing serious damage to buildings near the fault.

"Of the deadliest earthquakes in a given year, only two in the last 10 years have been of the same magnitude, and four in the last 10," said Prof Joanna Faure Walker, Head of the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction at University College London. from the BBC, Tuesday (7/2/2023).
