5 famous giant holes in the world

The existence of sinkhole or collapse hole becomes a reminder that nature can quickly take what it has given. This hole can cause danger if it appears in the population area.

On the other hand, Sinkhole is also a natural wonder that can be found throughout the world. We can find a lot of sinkhole each with its characteristics. Some store underground water, some even contain forests.

Of the many sinkhole in various worlds, at least the following is the countdown of the 5 most famous giant holes as quoted from Listverse, Wednesday (1/3/2023).

5. El Zacaton Sinkhole, Mexico

With a total depth of 339 meters, El Zacaton is known as a sinkhole containing the deepest water in the world. Although Pozzo del Merro, which has a depth of 392 meters deeper, it is still unclear whether it is a sinkhole or a cave that is almost vertical.

At least, one diver has lost his life when trying to reach the bottom of this hole. The most striking and famous nature features in the karst landscape are Sinkhole El Zacatón.

More than 20 different phenomena can be found in this area, including springs that are heated in underground volcanic activities, caves, and travertine formations. In addition there are five strange collapses that are close to each other but are not connected. El Zacaton is the deepest of all.

4. Cave of Swallows, Mexico

Cave of Swallows is home to biodiversity. This area is among the six most amazing and baseless underground caves.

Because of being touched by humans, this place is part of San Luis Potos's Protected Natural Area. This vertical cave shaft dropped 372 meters 580 meters from a higher edge before reaching the bottom.

Cave of Swallows is basically a gaping hole measuring 49 to 62 meters at the bottom of the forest. This cave is quite high for the base jumper (buildings, antennas, spans, and earth) to jump from the edges and fall freely for a few seconds before opening their parachutes. Therefore, this location is popular among extreme sports fans.

3. The Great Blue Hole, Belize

The Great Blue Hole of Belize is one of the natural wonders located off the coast of Belize on the East Coast of Central America, not far from the Center of Lighthouse Reef, an atoll about 100 kilometers from Belize City on the mainland.

Great Blue Hole has a depth of 125 meters and width of more than 300 meters. This area is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The shape is like a perfect circle in the middle of a coral reef known as Lighthouse Reef.

2. Crveno Jezero Red Lake, Croatia

Crveno Jezero's karst phenomenon is famous for its large size and characteristic characteristics in the world. Some hydrological measurements on the surface of the lake carried out in the 1950s, including the reading of depth in 39 locations.

With 18 large or small basins that are dry or filled with water, Cveno Jezero Red Lake, which is located less than one kilometer to the west of Imotski, is the largest in the area both in terms of the area of visible or invisible areas. The name refers to the red rocks perched on a cliff that rises more than 250 meters above the ground.

1. Xiaoxhai Tiankeng, China

Xiaoxhai Tiankeng, has become the biggest and deepest sinkhole in the world so far. Some experts wonder whether this mysterious sinkhole formation is the result of meteorite crashing into the earth.

Meanwhile, other experts believe that the sinkhole was gradually formed for around 128 thousand years, because the water that seeped into the underground river slowly 'carved' the surrounding limestone.

But one thing is certain, its depth is estimated 660 meters with a volume of 130 million cubic meters. Tianankeng which means heavenly hole, is a home for ecosystems around 1,285 species of plants and animals. In the rainy season, the waterfall flows from the mouth of the hole, to the underground river and the cave tissue at the bottom
