Fiber Optic Coverage, Average National Broadband Internet Speed Exceeds Target

The JENDELA program was introduced to improve the coverage and quality of the internet connection network for the benefit of the people and residents of Malaysia. This program, which was introduced since the beginning of 2020, has helped in improving the coverage and quality of the internet network not only in populated areas, but also in rural areas.

MCMC is expected to present the report for the fourth quarter of 2022 at the end of this month, but the Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Fahmi Fadzil has somewhat confirmed that the total coverage and average speed of the national broadband internet has exceeded the set target.

7.74 million premises have been covered with fiber optic connections by the end of 2022, surpassing the target of 7.5 million premises previously set. It is expected that by 2025, as many as 9 million premises will have this fiber optic connection.

In terms of the average mobile broadband internet speed, he said that it is currently at a speed of 116.03Mbps, far exceeding the 35Mbps target that was also set for the end of the year. It is likely that this includes the connection speed of the recently introduced 5G network.

4G coverage in populated areas is also now at 96.92 percent, 0.02 percent higher than the set target. As said, the Communications and Multimedia Commission will provide more details on the achievements during the fourth quarter of last year at the end of this year.
