Honda patent the air bag system for motorcycles

Motorcycles contributed to the highest death toll in an accident in Malaysia last year. The problem with motorcycles is that if they are involved in an accident there is no structure that can defend the rider from serious injury. Honda as the world's number one motorcycle producer however has patented the air bag system to resolve the issue.

The patent shows the air bag is placed on the seat. When activated, the air bag expands to protect the chest and back of the motorcycle passenger. The air bag then remains on the rider's body if they are thrown from the motorcycle. The system is designed for high -powered motorcycles as well as for scooters. The difference lies in the location of the air bag. On the scooter it is placed behind the rider and on the high -powered motorcycle it is in front of the seat.

The use of airbags on Honda motorcycles is not a new idea. The system has been offered on the Honda Gold Wing model since 2006 with it on the display of this powerful motorcycle instrument.

With a new patent filed, it is possible that Honda will eventually offer air bag systems on other motorcycle models their release. While it becomes reality, there are alternatives such as air bags built into pants and clothes worn by the rider.
