The Malaysian Civil Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) is currently considering a proposal to impose fines or financial penalties on airlines that fail to ensure compliance with established flight schedules.
The Ministry, in response to a question in Parliament, stated that this proposal could be implemented with changes or additions to existing license or permit conditions.
This measure is also expected to ensure that the cancellation or rescheduling of flights does not happen again.
It is also added that airlines that cancel flights due to factors within the company's control – such as technical or passenger capacity that is not satisfactory to the extent that the flight is delayed or canceled are subject to providing a replacement payment within 30 days, or rerouting.
In case of failure, MAVCOM can impose a penalty of up to RM200,000.
MAVCOM has also previously asked all airlines to strengthen the management of handling flight delays and cancellations, including improving communication to passengers as outlined in the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016.
