How elephant rock is formed
The most common scientific explanation of this phenomenon is, elephants and other rock formations in Heimey originated from the volcanic activity of Eldfell volcanoes, which have erupted many times and continue to be active in the modern era.
The cliff consists of basal rocks. Basal rock texture adds to the similarity because it gives rise to the appearance of the original elephant skin that looks wrinkled and grayish.

Basal is very common in Iceland. There are several more famous basal rock cliffs found on Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, Svartifoss Waterfall, and Gerðuberg at Snæfellsnes.
Elephant Rock location
Elephant Rock is located on the outskirts of Heimey, the largest and only inhabited island in the Westman Islands. The island towering 200 meters from the sea.
The area is only 13.4 square kilometers, and 2.2 square kilometers of which are the addition of a terrible volcanic eruption in 1973. Elephant Rock is in the western part of Heimey which is sticking out from Mount Dalfjall.
