White House Backs Act That Would Ban Apps Like TikTok

The United States wants to ban applications from abroad that are seen to cause security issues for the country through the RESTRICT Act. It stands for the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology Act which gives the U.S. Department of Commerce the power to ban technology from abroad that it believes has the potential to harm national security.

The RESTRICT Act now has the support of the White House and at the same time also receives support from the government and the opposition. Among the applications that will be threatened by this act is TikTok, which is often accused of sharing user data with China. Despite repeated denials and U.S. user data being transferred to Oracle-owned browsers, there is still a movement that wants to ban it outright.

This is seen as similar to what China did which banned Google, Meta, Twitter and many other apps from their country. The move to ban TikTok was started by Donald Trump and is only now being continued by President Biden's administration. Installation of the TikTok app on devices owned by civil servants has been banned since last year.

In an official statement, TikTok said "The US ban on TikTok is a ban on the exportation of American culture and values to the billions of people who use our services around the world".
