This year has been a pretty good year for the Sony PlayStation console business. The supply chain issue has been resolved with the PlayStation 5 console now easily available to purchase without having to go through the lottery process since 2020. With the console becoming more affordable, Sony announced that 19.1 million PlayStation 5s have been sold in fiscal year 2022.
The result is now as many as 38.4 million PlayStation 5 have been sold since its launch in 2020. Fiscal year 2022 is the year that recorded the highest sales of PS5 since its launch. With this it is easily the current generation console with the highest sales leaving the Xbox Series S/X which is estimated to have sold around 19 million units only so far.
The total sales are encouraging but PS5 is still behind the sales of PlayStation 2 (155 million), PlayStation 4 (117.2 million), PlayStation (~103 million), PlayStation 3 (87.4 million) and PlayStation Portable (~82 million).
