Android Announces “Auto-Archive” – An Alternative To Uninstalling Apps To Save Storage

Even if you've bought a 128GB or 256GB smartphone in 2023, that's still not enough. Especially if you don't actively use cloud storage like iCloud or Google Photos. When the storage is full the first thing you will usually do is find the picture you don't like and delete it. Some people look for applications that have not been used for a long time and uninstall them.

You definitely know and you should know that you can increase your device's internal storage space without uninstalling apps. If you're using an iPhone, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and select Offload Unused App. This feature will save applications that you have not used for a long time without deleting user data.

Latest Android comes with more or less the same feature which is Auto-Archive. This feature can give up to 60% extra storage on your device. It compresses user application data and stores it in an archive. The application can no longer be used but the data is all preserved. When you want to resume use the download again in the Play Store and it will be restored to the previous state.

This feature however is built into the Play Store and will only be active if the internal storage of the user's device is almost full. Play Store will issue a notification whether the user wants to enable Auto-Archive or not. This allows users to install new apps on devices whose storage is almost full.

This feature also cannot be used on all applications. This is because only developers can determine whether their application can support Auto-Archive or not.
