Apple today only sells three models of AirPods, namely the 2nd generation AirPods and the 3rd generation AirPods Pro. Each has its own advantages such as ANC support, sound passthrough mode, spatial audio and different charging frame sizes.
Apple has recently been awarded a patent for a charging frame for a set of earphones (AirPods) equipped with a screen. This screen is not only for displaying things but can also be touched for user control.
This screen is said to be able to switch audio sources, control music, and control each earphone. This patent also states that the screen can display a special Apple Music interface that when touched will have tactile feedback.
The charger frame is also designed to support pinch control. Each squeeze can change between active noise canceling mode or sound penetrating mode. For now it's just a patent that Apple studies what the next AirPods idea is and it's not necessarily that this patent will be realized.
