ARRW Hypersonic Missile Development Cancelled

Hypersonic missiles are a new category of weapons with high destructive power. It cannot be repelled because so far there is no system that can intercept it due to its high speed. So far only Russia has Kinzhal type hypersonic missiles used in the war in Ukraine. But the United States is also actively developing their system through the Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) and Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) projects since 2019.

But last weekend the AGM-183A ARRW project developed by Raytheon was canceled after several failures in previous tests. The other two tests will continue simply for the collection of data that can help the development of the HAWC system by their competitor Lockheed Martin. Both ARRWs and HAWCs are hypersonic missiles that are launched from the air using bombers.

The ARRW should be capable of flying up to Mach 20 (~ 23,0000 km/h) and launched up to 1600 km from the target. Because of its extremely high speed, targets are destroyed by kinetic force without the need for large explosives.

A Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic missile system is also being developed by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Navy's Zumwalt-class submarines. CPS can not only be used on naval ships but also on submarines and land launch systems. It shares a warhead with the Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) system being developed by the United States Army.
