The Artemis I mission was successfully launched last year to test the SLS rocket system that will launch humans back to the moon. With the success of Artemis I, the Artemis II mission will be launched in 2024 this time with a human crew.
NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) have announced the four crew members of the Artemis II mission. It consisted of Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist 1 Christina Hammock Koch, and Mission Specialist 2 Jeremy Hansen. When launched later, Artemis II will carry out a 10-day mission around the moon before returning to Earth.
During the Artemis I mission last December, the Orion capsule only carried a statue with it equipped with various sensors to ensure that the Artemis II mission was carried out safely with a human crew.
The capabilities of the Orion spacecraft's life support system will be fully tested in the Artemis II mission. It will be the first time in more than 50 years that humans have returned to orbit the moon. It will also be the first time a female astronaut, a black astronaut and a Canadian citizen have been involved in a mission to the moon. If all goes well, humans will return to the surface of the moon by 2025.
