Electric Cars Can Cause Multi-storey Parking Structures to Collapse

There are more and more electric vehicles (BEVs) on Malaysian roads, so much so that users have started to complain about the lack of charging stations on highways. Various issues need to be resolved if electric vehicles want to replace fossil fuel vehicles (ICE) in the near future. In the United Kingdom, a new issue has been detected, which is that with the number of BEVs increasing, it may be possible to demolish multi-storey parking buildings.

In a report by The Telegraph, the British Parking Association (BPA) issued a warning that the increase in the number of BEVs could cause the old parking structure to collapse. This is because BEVs are much heavier than ICE vehicles. The issue is more serious in the UK as most parking structures were built using the standards of the 50s-60s when vehicles were much lighter.

BEVs are typically heavier due to the large battery packs used. In Malaysia, for example, the weight of the BYD Atto 3 reaches 1750kg while the Honda H-RV with a petrol engine only weighs 1400kg even though it has the same size. When added to the weight of passengers, it puts pressure on parking structures not designed for modern electric vehicles.
